What is supposed to happen when you check the boxes in chatterbox?

I took it to be some way to make sense of the confusing flow of messages in various thread, and assumed once checked, that box would disappear, allowing you to keep up with the responses you've read

After fiddling with it for a while... I really don't see what it does at all.
