"This world is a different place anymore."

You're wrong in one respect. The world hasn't changed; it's always been a minefield of strangers that will fcuk you in the arse given any opportunity.
The only difference is that these days we are, courtesy of the internet, exposed to a far wider field of strangers.
DO NOT: believe, without proof; trust, at face value; rely on, for anything important; commit, time, money or reputation to; until you've had not only a face to face, but also met their family.
If you've been on the 'net for upto 10 years, you probably believe that 9 out'a 10 people on-line are "OK"; but when you've been using "it", or its precursors for 30+ years, you'll learn otherwise.
If they can; they will. And this place, rather than being the exception, proves the rule.
