To clarify things ... the Perl language only implements "single-dimension" lists/arrays and hashes. To achieve "multi-dimensionality," it uses references. In the case at bar, the single-dimension variable sites contains references to three other elements. It so happens that each of these are, in turn, identically structured, but the second element could just-as-easily have been a string.
