Yes. The layout of PM is not quite as consistent as it might be. ;-) I didnt realize this at the time I wrote the patch. I think ar0n and tye have at least partially resolved this with an HR tag for now.

when posting replies to replies, the hints do not even appear. Is this a feature?

Not in the slightest. Its another side effect of the inconsistent layout of the site. Hopefully over time things will get more and more consistent and ultimately showhints will be available wherever you can enter a node. But dont hold your breath for now.. :-)
