Image::Magick is a possible alternative.

It would be useful to know why GD.pm refuses to install. For instance, if it refuses to install because you're missing libpng, you're probably SOL until you install libpng.

Does it have to be PNG? PNG is a nasty format to work with -- thank goodness they have a nice reference library for us to use. If you use 32-bit TGAs, you can avoid all this library nonsense and munge pixels by hand, the hard fun way. :-) Targa's a really nice format for image manipulation. Have a look at it on Wotsit.
