I like this idea. First (in priority), I'd like Newest Nodes to show number of replies (both direct replies and total number of notes in thread as "5/14"). Next, showing approval status and consideration also makes sense (provided they can be done in very little space). I'd have flags of:

U
Unapproved
A
Approved
F
Front-paged
C
Considered
so the total flag would match /^[UAF]C?$/. The C, if present, would probably be a link to Nodes to Consider just like the "Considered" is in the approval nodelet (when viewing a considered node).

I'd also like the front-page status of nodes shown on the section pages (such as SoPW and Meditations), probably with the ability to front-page nodes that have been approved. Note that you can already front-page/approve unapproved nodes from there if you like (select "show unapproved content" from user settings, I think).

So, for now, you might want to hit each section when you want to triage. That is what I do. If I want to triage the front page, then I open one window to the front page and one window to SoPW (for example) and compare. Not as nice as I'd like it, but it works.

I'd also like the consideration status of visible replies to show when viewing the root node (or a reply higher up in the thread).

And my biggest wish for Newest Nodes is to separate new replies to old threads from (and prior to) new replies to new threads and making the latter optional.

But, to be honest, I doubt any of these will make it to the top of my to-do list any time soon. I recently, for lack of time, gave up trying to return to writing a Perl book and the current system works, just not as pleasantly as I'd like. Perhaps some others will look into one of more of these ideas, though I expect most of them also have busy lives. I'd probably be more likely to fix up the rather badly broken approval nodelet (which requires near-gymnastics in order for it to be used "correctly").

In summary, I think you are mistaken when you say "Newest Nodes seems to be the place for that", at least for now. (:

Thanks for the idea.
