you loop on the files matched by the glob.
So for each filename the s/// calculates the new filename $new 
for ( glob "*.abc" ) {
  ($new = $_) =~ s/\.abc$/.edf/; 
   rename $_, $new or warn "can't rename '$old' to '$new'";
}
