Unfortionatly, that doesn't work. 
s/\W|\s//g;

[download]
successfully does what it says it will - both: 
s/\W//g;

[download]
and 
s/\s//g;

[download]
thereby eliminating the whitespace that I wanted to preserve (both regular expressions do that, actually)
