It depends on how you call glob:
In a directory containing the files aaaa, bbbb, cccc, .dddd, .eeee, .ffff

glob (and similar '<>'): 
$ perl -e "print '-> ', join '|', glob('*');"
-> aaaa|bbbb|cccc

$ perl -e "print '-> ', join '|', glob('.*');"
-> .|..|.dddd|.eeee|.ffff

$ perl -e "print '-> ', join '|', glob('* .*');"
-> aaaa|bbbb|cccc|.|..|.dddd|.eeee|.ffff
