2004, that was the Perl 5.6.x days, no?

Well, the greatest changes in Perl 5.8.x were, in my humble opinion, just the way Unicode is handled (see Encode).

The fairly recent changes in Perl 5.10 are much farther reaching. You can find nice short introductions to those new features in the Perl Tips articles by pjf.
