You will find this thread interesting: I have been away from perl for a long time. Need suggestions for getting back in the game!. (Update: the thread above also mentions Dominus' book "Higher Order Perl". It is now available for free download, and I very much recommend it). As for the most useful perl-5.10.0 features I especially like say (like print, only shorter, and adds a newline at the end) and the `//` operator, which is like `\|\|` except that it tests for definedness rather than truthness. 2004, that was the Perl 5.6.x days, no? Well, the greatest changes in Perl 5.8.x were, in my humble opinion, just the way Unicode is handled (see Encode). The fairly recent changes in Perl 5.10 are much farther reaching. You can find nice short introductions to those new features in the Perl Tips articles by pjf.	[reply]

For me, the biggest changes I've seen are using threads and the rise of the Gtk2 gui. You may find the examples in Perl/Gtk2 StudyGuide interesting. If you are on Win32, Camelbox: A build of Gtk2-Perl for Windows is a great 1 step install of Perl 5.10, Gtk2, dbs, and much more.
