For me, the biggest changes I've seen are using threads and the rise of the Gtk2 gui. You may find the examples in Perl/Gtk2 StudyGuide interesting. If you are on Win32, Camelbox: A build of Gtk2-Perl for Windows is a great 1 step install of Perl 5.10, Gtk2, dbs, and much more.
