Yes, by far, you are better off learning to do it by hand. Why? Because you will learn how the GUI toolkit actually works, the GUI designer throws you a fish, instead of teaching you how to fish. :-)
Learning the intricacies of a GUI designer takes as long as learning the basics manually.
