While you can use numbers and they are unambiguous it is easier to use the node name.
For example to link to your home node I type [princepawn] to get this link: princepawn
If I want to use a different name I use a | char after the real name, thus [princepawn|some dude] gives this link: some dude
The only problem with names is namespace conflicts. In this case PM throws up the nodes with the same nemes like this link links.
If a node with the name you specify does not exist PM displays search results based on that. Very neat really.
