Thanks for your reply. I made a poor assumption. I was under the impression that: 
my $regex = ".*/home/members/index.htm.*";
if (/$regex/)

[download]
Was the same as 
if (/.*/home/members/index.htm.*/)

[download]
Which would fail. I was wrong!
