On several occasions in the past I've wanted to post nodes to the Code section of Perlmonks and been left scratching my head over where my particular contribution belongs. It doesn't seem to fit in any of the existing categories except for "Utility Scripts", which seems to me to be such a broad catch-all that it sort of defeats the concept of categorization in the first place. Or of course "Miscellaneous" - same problem. (I am not saying that we shouldn't have a "Miscellaneous" category, just that if there's a code focus that ought to be of broad interest to a lot of Monks, it ought to be split out from a catch-all like "Miscellaneous").
Many of my contributions to Perlmonks, code-wise, concern the Perl installation itself (showPerlDirConfig): the exploration of it for the education of newer Perl users, the management of it by administrators, and the creation of it when building a new Perl from the source kit.
Since this is Perlmonks, it seems to me that is would make sense to allocate a Catacomb Category specifically for code (modules, utilities, tools) relating to the Perl Installation itself. I propose that this new code category be Perl Installation Admin unless someone comes up with a better (shorter?) counter-proposal.
The existing categories are:
- Audio Related Programs
- Fun Stuff
- Win32 Stuff
- CGI Programming
- GUI Programming
- Miscellaneous
- Chatterbox Clients
- HTML Utility
- Text Processing
- Cryptography
- Utility Scripts
- Networking Code
- E-Mail Programs
- Web Stuff
- PerlMonks.org Related Scripts
- FTP stuff
- NT Admin
Thanks for your consideration and comment on this proposal.
