I'd like to propose that we (collectively) take action to keep The Monastery Gates fresh. I'd like to see, whenever the front-page checkbox is left unchecked and the section of the gates for that node type is sufficiently stale (perhaps 2 hours for SoPW and 1-2 days for other sections), that the node title be set blinking to encourage people to frontpage things.

This thought actually occurred to me 18 days ago, but I'm just now getting around to passing it on; sorry for the delay.

I'd be stoked to have a Nodelet that listed how long it's been since a node was Front-Paged.

If it was broken down by section, that would be even better.

I can think of several ways I would react to nodes with blinking titles.

Frontpaging doesn't even make the top five :)

Why not just automatically post front page everything if that's a concern?

    Abigail

Because the front page becomes unmoderated. He's more likely asking for fresh GOOD content, not fresh spam.

I think Abigail's point was: Why push monks to frontpage things? If a post is worthy of frontpaging, then by all means do it. But if it's a slow day full of "homework assignment posts" and "Tell me why my code doesn't work. - Uhhh, you forgot a semicolon." type stuff, why frontpage useless crap just to get something to stop blinking.

And if you are bored of the Monastery Gates, come to the Newest Nodes page. That's my front page.

Personally, I have never front-paged an article because I don't feel I know what constitutes 'Front Page' material. Are there any guidelines?

Gee, I wonder if the PerlMonks FAQ addresses this.

      Nope.

I don't use the The Monastery Gates that often but I agree that it is a good idea to keep it fresh. However thanks to Firefox I never have to see another blinking element (or a marquee for that matter) ever again, so I would never see your blinking node titles :) If something like this is going to be implemented I think it would be better done as a css tag; that way those who want it can display it to their taste and those that don't can ignore it.
