AFAIK the my Dog $spot syntax has never been deprecated (see this thread). Pseudohashes have, but the fields pragma works with restricted hashes instead starting perl 5.9.

It never really worked anyway, as Damian was quick to point out. If you forget to add it somewhere, it blows the whole thing.

True, and I personally don't like the syntax, but you don't need it, except for compile-time checks. The run-time checks will work without it too, as long as you use fields (as demonstrated in my post above)
