It was supposed to be used for object typing, in conjunctin with pseudo-hashes. It had a lot of problems and is deprecated now. Damian Conway wrote about it in his book (or maybe that was a lecture I'm remembering).

AFAIK the `my Dog $spot` syntax has never been deprecated (see this thread). Pseudohashes have, but the fields pragma works with restricted hashes instead starting perl 5.9. "What should it profit a man, if he should win a flame war, yet lose his cool?"	[reply] [d/l]

It never really worked anyway, as Damian was quick to point out. If you forget to add it somewhere, it blows the whole thing.	[reply]

True, and I personally don't like the syntax, but you don't need it, except for compile-time checks. The run-time checks will work without it too, as long as you `use fields` (as demonstrated in my post above) "What should it profit a man, if he should win a flame war, yet lose his cool?"
