Well, this is a departure from perl, but you can play multiplayer Settlers of Catan on a Java client. The original version was http://settlers.cs.northwestern.edu/ and it's since been open sourced on Sourceforge so there are some clones popping up. If you're ever on the northwestern site and see a "hiphut" labeled game with xdg in it, that'll be me.

As a side note, though I've not yet played it, many of my friends who enjoyed Settlers are now raving about a game called "Puerto Rico".

    Yes, I found the Java client at Northwestern shortly after I started playing the game. And this is now the second time I've heard of "Puerto Rico"... I'll have to find out what it is.
