At Origins in 1995, I won several Catan tournaments and have played it at Origins every year I've gone since. I also played a bunch when I lived in Madison (a strong gaming town). Never played Carcasonne, though.

Origins Gaming, for those of you (like me) who'd never heard of it.

I got it recently but haven't had chance to really sit down with my friends and play it (they prefer the pub). Like you I'd love an online version to play. | [reply] |

For those who want to play the game online, there is the (albeit German) http://www.brettspielwelt.de (Java required). There are also English speaking people online there, and lots of lots of other (board-)games to play. The implementations there aim to be faithful to the normal board rules, and for Carcassonne and Settlers (there called "Siedler von Katan") the implementations are pretty close to the rules.

Ooh, I'm quite impressed that these german games (both of which were game of the year once), are actually well known in other places too.. I havent played for a while, but I love both of them..
Oh, and my claim to fame in this area, I met the guy that designed Siedler of Catan (spelt with a C, even here) at the games fair in Essen a few years back.. Great place to be, btw. (November every year in Essen..) I also have a signed copy of the PC game. (Note, it's nowhere near as fun as the board game.. hohum..)

Well, this is a departure from perl, but you can play multiplayer Settlers of Catan on a Java client. The original version was http://settlers.cs.northwestern.edu/
and it's since been
open sourced on Sourceforge so there are some clones popping up. If you're ever on the northwestern site and see a "hiphut" labeled game with xdg in it, that'll be me.
As a side note, though I've not yet played it, many of my friends who enjoyed Settlers are now raving about a game called "Puerto Rico".

Yes, I found the Java client at Northwestern shortly after I started playing the game. And this is now the second time I've heard of "Puerto Rico"... I'll have to find out what it is.

My friends and I have played Die Siedler since sophomore year of college. One of the guys brought the game back from a trip to Germany and we were hooked ever since. We are purists and only play the German version (spending the extra $$ to get it on ebay). Even some of the artifacts of mis-translating the rules are still house rules. Additionally, the game accounts for about 75% of my German vocabulary knowledge: siedlung, entwicklung, langste handelstrasse, monopol, strassenbau, ritter, rauber, etc..
Nowadays, since we're all geographically separated, we play online using NetSet. It's for Windows, but I've always had good luck running it in Linux under Wine.
Siedler always goes better with Pokey Stix (no, not Pocky sticks).

At my previous job, the devs alternated between playing Soldier of Fortune II and a network version of Catan after working hours.
And it's standard gear for every camping trip / wintersports vacation.

In Perth we have monthly Catan tournaments. I do OK, but my wife does better! Before each tourney, she asks "Am I 'Evil Leece' today?"
Other games we're fond of include: Medici, Princes of Florence, Taj Mahal, Carcassone, Attack!, Vinci (which is way, way cool), History of the World, Diplomacy and El Grande. And Button Men (
Rob enjoys hacking Perl, boardgames, geocaching, and beating people up.). A definite theme there. Except for Button Men.

Carcassonne is one of my very favorite boardgames. The two expansions "Inns & Cathedrals" and "Traders & Builders" make the game quite fun, indeed. More things to keep in mind, more ways to get points, more ways to subvert others:) I like it most because it's easy to pick up and play a game whenever, but the randomness keeps it interesting.
Settlers of Catan is a great game, as well. I've played both the classic version and with the "Cities & Knights" expansion, which is excellent. This one is more involved and often takes a couple hours with my group of friends. It's fun for a planned night of game-playing and socializing.
I also agree with the recommendation of Puerto Rico. Once you've played it a couple times, you realize the huge number of possibilities for choosing buildings and crops. It also has what I think is a neat twist on the old turned-based game mechanic.
On a related note, if you haven't heard of it yet, you should check out BoardgameGeek.com. It's full of game reviews and recommendations. We've found a number of fun new games through that site.
