My friends and I have played Die Siedler since sophomore year of college. One of the guys brought the game back from a trip to Germany and we were hooked ever since. We are purists and only play the German version (spending the extra $$ to get it on ebay). Even some of the artifacts of mis-translating the rules are still house rules. Additionally, the game accounts for about 75% of my German vocabulary knowledge:
siedlung,
entwicklung,
langste handelstrasse,
monopol,
strassenbau,
ritter,
rauber, etc..
Nowadays, since we're all geographically separated, we play online using NetSet. It's for Windows, but I've always had good luck running it in Linux under Wine.
Siedler always goes better with Pokey Stix (no, not Pocky sticks).
