in reply to Hosting locations for CPAN projects

While I like the current freedom to do things willy-nilly, I think I like even better the notion of a site built with projects in mind. Not just the distribution of them, but the whole nine yards, source control, bug management etc. Seems to me like a desirable evolution of CPAN! Certainly one for which I would pay, be it money or labor.

This discussion has been had a couple times. It will not happen on CPAN itself. CPAN is and remains the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network — if nothing else, because that's all the mirrors volunteered to be.

However, just like search.cpan.org and rt.cpan.org are completely distinct from the CPAN itself, there is nothing stopping someone from setting up a forge.cpan.org or something like that. Except that so far, noone of those who suggested that there might be a need has actually gone through with it.

Personally, I'm not in opposition, but I don't see a particular need either.

    Makeshifts last the longest.

It's ironic that we who reap havoc on the world of users so often are hesitant to change things ourselves. I'm torn myself and while what I'm doing now will work just as well in the future, I can't help but wonder if there isn't a better way.
