dragonchild has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I've been adhoc'ing where PDF::Template and Excel::Template live, primarily because I haven't gotten a server set up at home and have been able to host my projects on servers wherever I work.

But, I've been wanting to make them more like "real projects", so to speak. I've know there's several ways to do it, such as SourceForge, but I keep thinking that http://rt.cpan.org is such a great thing. And, I personally would love to use something like cvs.cpan.org, wiki.cpan.org, and mailing-lists.cpan.org ... just to keep everything under the same roof.

Are there reasons why this hasn't happened? I know a lot of distros (DBI, CGI::Application, Template, etc.) wouldn't use this, but what about those that would love to? Heck, I'd even be willing to pay a nominal fee per distro to have CPAN host them, just to have the coordination between where I put versions out for download, where I collect my bugreports, and the rest of my project management crap.

I'm posting here first because I didn't want to bother Brian without discussing it with you guys first.

Actually DBI does do this but at perl.org, not cpan.org. Its version control is hosted at svn.perl.org under SVN (subversion) and the mailing lists are dbi-foo@perl.org. I'm not sure what if any general policy there is about other modules living there, but it might be worth an email to find out.

While I like the current freedom to do things willy-nilly, I think I like even better the notion of a site built with projects in mind. Not just the distribution of them, but the whole nine yards, source control, bug management etc. Seems to me like a desirable evolution of CPAN! Certainly one for which I would pay, be it money or labor.

This discussion has been had a couple times. It will not happen on CPAN itself. CPAN is and remains the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network — if nothing else, because that's all the mirrors volunteered to be.

However, just like search.cpan.org and rt.cpan.org are completely distinct from the CPAN itself, there is nothing stopping someone from setting up a forge.cpan.org or something like that. Except that so far, noone of those who suggested that there might be a need has actually gone through with it.

Personally, I'm not in opposition, but I don't see a particular need either.

It's ironic that we who reap havoc on the world of users so often are hesitant to change things ourselves. I'm torn myself and while what I'm doing now will work just as well in the future, I can't help but wonder if there isn't a better way.

A lot of CPAN distributions are hosted on Sourceforge; would that work for you?

Actually, I looked at SourceForge, but I noticed that SourceForge isn't linked with rt.cpan.org, which I would love. Maybe I'm dreaming too much, but I know that CVS and Bugzilla/Bugtraq can be linked, so why not rt.cpan.org and whatever repository one uses?
