dchandler has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hello. I am working on a Windows XP machine and am interested in installing whatever programs I need so that I can make LWP functional with HTTPS webpages. I downloaded Crypt::SSLeay but was then told I need to get openssl? After downloading openSSL, it told me that I needed a C++ compiler. I do not have a C++ compiler, do I actually need one of these or am I doing something wrong?

Get a ppd (precompiled binary) from crazyinsomniacs repository which has lots of goodies. You will find it at http://crazyinsomniac.perlmonk.org/perl/ppm/ He maintains ppms for both 5.6 and 5.8. In brief:

    # For 5.6 ppm install http://crazyinsomniac.perlmonk.org/perl/ppm/Crypt-SSLeay.p +pd # For 5.8 ppm install http://crazyinsomniac.perlmonk.org/perl/ppm/5.8/Crypt-SSLe +ay.ppd

    cheers

      Will this work with PAR?

That would be great, ssl-enabled stand-alone execs...

Provided you bundle all the bits, ie LWP, Crypt::SSLeay plus the libeay32.dll and ssleay32.dll files that come with the suplementary download no reason why not.

        cheers

You didn't use "Super Search", did you? I searched on "SSLeay windows" and the very first hit seemed to address your problem.

Gmail got me to Mail-Webmail-Gmail which got me to README.WINDOWS which is a procedure written up a little over a month ago. Maybe it might help.
