Nice timing. I interviewed for a new job last week. I was hesitant about even applying for the job b/c the title is Senior Software Developer and I could only think in terms of "...But I know so many better hackers." Then I realized most of them are found here and generally have everyone else's back; whether it's a design choice, a twisty regex, or B:: space boogeyman. I don't think I've ever asked a work related question here but the mere fact that I could and that I'd probably get 3 right answers within the hour made me really quite confident about trying for, and taking, the job. I started today. So I echo lvanhout's general thanks and add my own. I know how valuable and important this site is both for personal and professional development. To any Monk who answered a question of mine or wrote one of the many books on my desk, I will gladly buy you lunch if you /msg me the next time you're in Seattle. (For the rest'a y'all slackers, it's Dutch.)	[reply]

Don't be too effusive and glowing about the help you get on here ... pretty soon "they" will start taking notice (this is open to the general public after all) ... then one thing will lead to another ... and then BAM. You will have to start declaring it as "income" on your tax returns. Then you won't be able to buy lunch for anyone, not even yourself.	[reply]

I have been here for about 2 years, I share your feeling and I love this site. I ask for help when I have questions, and I always got my answers. The other side of the fun is to answer questions, when I know the answers, or I thought I knew ;-)	[reply]

This site has helped me with work related and non-work related questions, in addition to increasing my knowledge and love of programming as a whole. In particular, opening my eyes to world of functional programming, and lots of other weird twisted stuff, has led me to embrace theory and such -- even if what I'm working on in corporate america sucks. Thanks for being a refuge for real computer science and hacking. (Famous other corporate-acceptable software religions be darned, I like this place, and it's one of the few places people think for themselves).	[reply]

I must admit every time I open a page here, I marvel at what a great site this is, but it was especially nice, Ivanhout, for you to post the sentiment. Considering the state of the rest of the web, this place is much like an unspoiled temple and it must emit some kind of aura to that effect. Also thanks is due to those few who are always helping and explaining, in the most polite and professional manner -- this has brought me a long way by just observing and reading as much as possible. I find that this sharing of knowledge is rare and inspiring in a world filled with so many other negative things to focus on.	[reply]

I too find this site fantastic, I first googled across it looking for solutions to a tricky perl problem, here I found the question already posted and answered. After a quick browse saw some problems I could help with and before you could obfuscate JAPH I had signed up and become both a giver and a taker. Since then my perl has improved in leaps and bound by following threads and accasionaly wading in when I think I have something to add. Only yesterday I ran into a sticky problem at work and after a few hours of my own investigation I felt out of my depth. The above node soon garnered a range of intersting pointers, comment and advice and soon got me back on track. Now all I need is to write a decent obfu... Thanks to all, R.	[reply]
