Recently, in the thread dynamic nicks -or- big PITA for vroom : ), it was posited that it might be interesting for monks to amend their nicks with a location. I can't do much about that, but I have added some fields to the stats pages that allow monks who are on the MonkMap to select a given monk as the origin, and display the range and bearing to any other monk who is mappified. This can be gotten to by either clicking 'Monk Maps' on the main stats page, or by clicking here. I'll be adding the ability to sort by range and/or bearing shortly.

mdillon had the suggestion of adding monkular birthdays to the database, using the same method as adding MonkMap location tags and OS tags. Any thoughts on this? I've also thought that anyone who wanted to make their email address available could use a similiar method.

I will be fixing the scanner to process email tags and birthday tags using the following format:

<!-- email:myemail@someaddress.com -->
<!-- birthday:04/30/1998 -->

If you'd like your birthday noted, but not the year (a gentleman never asks a ladies age!), substitute 'xxxx' (yes, that's 4 letter x's) as the year. It'll be a couple days before I modify the stats pages to display this information.

Remember, of course, that all this is voluntary. I understand that people may prefer not to give out their ages and email addresses, but putting yourself on the MonkMap should be harmless, and informative. If you're haven't done this, see Put yourself on the Monk Map for details.

    Great! Just one thing, though: I propose we use the ISO standard for birthdays -- i.e. year first, then month and then the day. Silly Americans, putting the month first.

      i agree. in fact, i made the proposal to jcwren with the date in that format, but i guess he didn't notice that part.

      however, since some people have already done it the silly american way on jcwren's instructions, i think that both the american mm/dd/yyyy and the iso yyyy/mm/dd should be accepted (sorry to the canadians and whatever europeans use dd/mm/yyyy).

        I must've missed that part, mdillon. I will, however, teach it accept both. European date formats are preferrable, and you'd think as much mySQL stuff as I do, I'd have thunk of that.

        So, no, I didn't ignore you, I just screwed up.

        By the way, the More useless Monk Stats node does mention that I'll be adding sorting shortly. Or maybe you just ignored that part. <G>

    Apparently I am one of those US-centric date mongers. Having had some sense beat into me by mdillon and ar0n , the date format requirement for birthdays is:

    <!-- birthday:yyyy/mm/dd -->

    The format of mm/dd/yyyy will also be recognized, but the yyyy/mm/dd format is preferrable.

    Weel, I've just by chance seen a page with a java Chatterbox client, it should be easy to expand that to register with your current location, but that would in fact blow up the chatterbox as you for example would need up to 5 digits to display a german location, e.g. DEHAL would mena DE for germany as common and HAL for Halle(Saale) do be proper displayed.
    Well ok, for inside US locations you could probably ommit the US :-)
    So, how to get your location into the Other_Users nodelet?

    i like the range/bearing thing. it would be nice to be able to sort the resulting list by the distance (allowing me to see, in order, who is nearest me).

    Neat stuff. A question - did you use great circle distances and bearings? For anything over a few hundred miles, the true shortest distance between two points on the earth's surface is along a great circle. Any ocean navigator (or ham radio operator) uses these calculations.
