Patrick Michaud Gives Perl6 Talk

Colin Jitlal sent out the following D/FW Perl Monger's meeting announcement yesterday evening:

It's that time again....

since this meeting will be held at TI, people planning to attend need to email me with their country of birth (don't ask).

the next DFW Perl Mongers meeting will be a technical presentation given by Patrick Michaud, the Perl6 pumpking on, surprise, surprise, Perl6. This talk will give an overview of Perl6, its history, its architecture (i.e., Perl6, Parrot, and Ponie), and some highlights of the new features and differences from Perl 5.

The talk will be aimed at people who are familiar with Perl 5, but not necessarily experts.

When: 10/26/2004, 6:30pm

Where: Texas Instruments South Campus
(2 blocks West of Forest Lane & Greenville Avenue)
South Lobby (sundial entrance) Conference room S1/S2

TI security requires that all attendees pre-register. Please contact me or Matt with your name and country of birth. TI security have checkpoints at all entrances to TI facilities, and they will require ID.

Prior to the meeting, I was somewhat dreading Perl6 but not any longer! Patrick did a wonderful job and made this an extremely enjoyable presentation. His overview of Perl6 (including the history and architecture) was very brief yet informative. The real meat of the talk came when he started comparing and contrasting Perl5 with Perl6. Did you know that the Perl6 compiler is being written in Perl6 grammars (which are made up of rules that are defined using Perl6 regular expressions)? Very cool! BTW, I didn't know that but I haven't followed the Apocolypses, Exegeneses and such either. Patrick has promised further talks on Perl6 in the near future. (Regular expressions will probably be the next talk.)	[reply]
