FWIW, Mediawiki, the software behind wikipedia, is now php, although it used to be perl. Dag nab it!

    They originally used UseMod. It’s not very scalable.

      Yes. UseMod makes old versions of a page into one page (with extension ".kp"). Despite not save complete version history, circumstantially can have many versions (eg if many frequently updates) and creates thus a very large file ".kp". (Sorry, my mother-tongue is spanish).

      No, I did google around a bit originally as I was curious myself, but didn't find anything real meaty. You can google on
      mediawiki "perl until"
      and that gets you "... As an example of Perl in action, Wikipedia itself was a CGI script written in Perl until January 2002. ..." ... and that's as far as I got. Maybe you'll have better luck.
