When I type something into the "search" box at the top of the page and there's no node with my query as its title, usually the action I want to take is to Super Search on that same string. I find it a bit odd that the search results page has a pre-populated form for searching CPAN, but a normal link to Super Search, where I then have to re-type my query.

Can/should this be changed? I often mistakenly submit CPAN searches after scanning the list of node titles. I would like to see the following changes made (in descending order of importance):

I'm probably going to Firefox-bookmark my way around this (map keyword 'ss' to 'http://www.perlmonks.com/index.pl? node_id=3989&go=Search&nf=1&BIT=%s' [without the space]), but if the changes to the Search Results page are relatively trivial, it'd be nice to do this for all monks.

I prefer the solution I noted in Re^2: Considering nodes for re-titling ("search").

Note that the current title search is often more resource intensive than Super Search. But Super Search absolutely refuses to be a resource hog, which is why it will pause after only searching about 10% of the database (depends on system load) if you don't give it any help narrowing down where to search.

Also note that using google to search PerlMonks likely won't work great now that thepen has nearly shut itself down. "We" have done some of the work to make a robot-friendly face for PerlMonks, but have not finished that work. The end of thepen means that this work should be higher priority, but alas, "we" are all just unpaid volunteers with busy lives (and I'm not talking about me, as I've had rather little to do with the fine work that has been done of late on this front).

After changing the submit button, I would put:
    • Populate the search form on the Not Found page with the original search string.

Not being a pmdev, I'm kind of forced to guess here, but my guess would be that because Super Search is highly resource intensive relative to most pages on the site, the gods and pmdev would like you to use it only if you really mean to, as opposed to simply by clicking a button. So pasting or retyping your query is kind of an acknowledgement that "yes, I intend to do a Super Search now."
