I'm not saying "no", but you could consider setting up a PerlMonks BOF at a YAPC.
Regarding the "make the entry price cheaper", the entry price for YAPC::EU::2005, for instance, is of 89 euros (0, if you're a speaker). It might look expensive to some people, but the truth is that it is actually quite cheap, considering all the things you get out of it (some of them are still a secret, sorry, but you'll have to trust me on this one).
Making it cheaper than that would be... quite difficult :-\ | [reply] |

For my part, I'd say it would be better to try and get people to go to YAPC. Setting up additional conferences would tend to fragment things, as people are likely to only want (or be able to afford) to attend one or two a year - and everyone probably has other specialities with their associated conferences as well.
As far as meeting the other monks goes, its probably worth taking a look at the monk maps or pmplanet and monkmailing individuals you're acquainted with online when you are going somewhere and likely to have time free to meet up for a drink :-)

I bet that could be interesting, a sort of sub-conference for perlmonks at YAPC. (Of course, I haven't been able to attend YAPC yet, so I'm sure I would be interested by anything happening at YAPC.)

Absolutely go for it. We did a PM get-to-gether at the last PerlCon, just a bunch of Rowdies in the back of the bar singing Old Perl songs around 1830 on Tuesday night. We will do it again this year. (Note: putting on a conference is hard work. As part of the Con Committee, you do _not_ have time to do any of the fun bits. As a BOF organizer in someone else's Con, you actually will get to attend your event.)

YAPC and PerlMonks are both coordinated by The Perl Foundation. If there's something you don't like about YAPC, just tell them and try to get it changed. | [reply] |

IANAL, but I think that depends on which YAPC you're talking about.
AFAIK, YAPC::EU is coordinated by YAPC::Europe Foundation (YEF).

It's not that I don't like YAPC or the price of it, which is easily justified, it's just that I was thinking more along the lines of something just for the PerlMonks members, be it a conference, or just a general get together.
Maybe cogs suggestion of a PerlMonks BOF at YAPC is the best way to go. But I don't think that could be achieved this year.

I think arranging a PM BOF at, e.g., this years y::E would be eminently achievable - a quick mail to the mailling list to ascertain a suitable day/time and venue availability with the organizers and an announcement here is all that it will take. Most BOF sessions tend to get arranged in an even more ad hoc manner than this IMO.

And if anyone does organise a PM BOF at YAPC::Europe, can they advertise it better than the one in Paris. Getting to hear about it afterwards was a bit of a disappointment.

I went to the PerlMonks gathering at YAPC and OSCON last year, and honestly, they weren't very big. There just aren't that many people on PM who go to conferences.

I've been considering hosting a Perl Monks BOF/BBQ at my house since YAPC is in Toronto this year .. but when to hold it? Tuesday night is the banquet/cruise; Monday night I'm unavailable; so my choices are beforehand (Sunday) or at the end (Wednesday).
Thoughts? Any monks going to YAPC next month?
