    Maybe you can tell us why the advice given until now has not helped you.

        I admit, my initial reply was a bit abrupt. I just think that the process of learning involves communication from both sides, and OP's approach was mildly inappropriate.

    Update: My apologies. I read "gzipped" where you had written plain old "zipped". Please disregard my answer below.


    Don't unzip; use the PerlIO gzip layer:

    use PerlIO::gzip; open my $in, '<:gzip', 'foo.txt.gz' or die $!; while (<$in>) { #etc; }
    See PerlIO::gzip. You need 5.8.x, though.
