If there is a Perl binding to the Starcraft API, I might be interested :)

Perl APIs for any sort of AI-based game would rock. A friend of mine rewrote the Quake3 AI from scratch using a modified C. I'd love to do something similar with, say, freeciv or Starcraft or whatever. But, since my language of choice is Perl, it'd have to be a Perl binding. :-)
- In general, if you think something isn't in Perl, try it out, because it usually is. :-)

Actually, with a bit of screen-scraping, most web-based games can be considered to have an "API". WWW::Mechanize and HTML::TreeBuilder will do enough of the work for you that you can concentrate mostly on coding the fun part: the AI. This rules out RTS games, though, unfortunately.

I love starcraft. Just got a new gaming PC so I can play some more modern games. However, I love Civ3 the most :). | [reply] |

Starcraft, all 3 versions of Warcraft & now probably 6 hours a week on World of Warcraft... Blizzard has gotten way too much money out of me over the last 10 years. Yes sir, guilty as charged.
However, when you get into mixing Perl with these things then you're getting into the realm of bots. Bots are generally frowned upon as they have unintended effects on game economies as has been painfully illustrated in just about every MMORPG out there. Blizzard is particularly sensitive about this with regards to WoW since it's their flagship product these days.
Hacker-oriented material has always been something that's been frowned upon here. So be careful. OTOH - I've personally written more than a few simulations using Perl to prototype primitive AI behaviors for games. I'd love to see more things like that done with Perl.

WoW bots are verboten, but they're pretty cool in actually providing for user written UI modifications to help players. Granted it's Lua and XML, not Perl; but still pretty cool.
Now if only I could find the time to write Perl to export auction house data from LootLink into a real RDBMS . . .

What would be an appropriate way to co-ordinate SC matches
through PM? Just send a /msg to individuals or post on
someone's scratch pad or what? I would be interested in combatting any PM SC players myself. That's bound to be
a source of interesting matchups.

Just have everyone decide on a server (I vote Battle.net East) and time (evenings are good), and add all Perlmonks to your friends list in-game so you know who to msg.
My primary name is Hammurabi. What's yours?
I'll be in-game for a bit if you want to meet up. | [reply] |
