Depending on what you expect from ls, you may say it acts stupid or not. But IMHO, this is not a reason to say that Berkeley people are stupid.

Anyone is free to write software how they like it to behave. Stupid may be considered those that copy blindly that software ...

And to some extent stupid may be considered those that just use it, keep complaining about it, and don't provide their modification, when they could patch it to suit their own needs. (I'm not talking here about non-programmers).

    I don't recall categorically saying "Berkeley people are stupid". I think you're blowing this up to make your point.

    However, making "ls" do different things depending on output channel leads to this very discussion we are having (regarding the purpose of "ls -1"). Hence, it was a bad choice. Hence, it was an idiotic action, and it happened "at Bezerkeley".

    Do I think that people at Berkeley are stupid? No.

    Do I think that all software that comes out of BSD releases are idiotic? Hell, no.

    Please don't make this more than it is. Me complaining about a misfeature. It's called having an opinion.
