I think there is an easy way to get the chick to at least
show up less: buy banner adds on the site. Buy tons of 'em.
The chick will then appear only now and then, and the rest
of the time you could see banners like: "Perlmonks is
brought to you in part by Azatoth a.k.a Captain Whiplash",
"Get YOUR PerlMonks Stagename here!",
or my favorite: "This is a professional Perl forum!".

Thanks Neophyte.
FYI for others if they're interested - I disabled show picture in IE5 and now the PM owners make their money and I don't get accuses for downloading anime!

I could be wrong, but I don't believe there is any money changing hands for that banner add.
The Everything Enging is developed by Vroom among other saints here. So for a while they were bouncing adds between here and Everything2. That certainly didn't cost anyone anything (for banner ads anyway) since the same people own both sites.
AnimeFu is owned by Commander Taco (of Slashdot) and Kurt The Pope. I don't know if they did any work on Everything, but my impression is these people are all good buddies, and are probably just being friendly.
This means that Perl Monks isn't making any money from banner ads, and is probably just a demo of the Everything Engine. Although I'm sure it would be nice if they could sell a few Banner Ads as well. ;)
This is all speculation of course; The closest I've been to any of these people is to see Vroom at in the Other Users box. ;)

Taco did some work on the Engine way back in the day. He was there when nate came up with the original idea. Malda does some work on E2 now and then. He's not doing much programming now, leaving most of that to nate and darrick. vroom spends some time on it too.
Kurt used to be Malda's roommate. He does some business stuff for EDC. They both put together Animefu as a sort of not-so-technical demonstration of what the Engine can do.
Someone else (vroom's best friend Ron, I believe) has been working on an Everything-based ad server.

I'm pretty sure I'm missing out on something, I think. I have "images that are ad-shaped" blocked by iCab, so I never see this potentially objectionable image. Is there a link I can follow to specifically see this ad?

Ahh, thanks for the link. Yes, iCab blocked the image on that page initially (it shows a little coffee cup), but I can then say "load all images" easily, and saw the banner finally. Thanks.
While I don't see anything strongly objectionable to that banner, I can see how some could be offended. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
