Last time I looked CPAN was just a Perl-module. So if you don't like it, just roll your own or patch it. Next we will have AM's complaining that some module only solves 99% of their homework and they therefore feel badly treated by this module writer!

If you consider the alternative (doing the whole install by hand including downloading and untarring all packages, following all dependencies, running all tests, ...) CPAN is a god-given present to us Perl-programmers.

Technically, you're right of course. But CPAN.pm is not your average run-of-the-mill Perl module. It's a central piece of our infrastructure, and almost everyone^* working with Perl uses it. I think we're entitled to place higher demands on it. ^BOCTAOE. But the Vanilla Perl efforts will come to the rescue of our Windows friends too ;)*	[reply]

Absolutely. And getting the public worked up over such an important item is a great way to get the masses into motion :) I took the time to go over the open tickets in CPAN.pm's RT queue: Allow CPAN.pm to detect bad/old mirrors is on there, with the promise of a fix cpan install $module added last week, with a patch Module::Signature warning appears even when no gpg is present contains a patch (this doesn't fix the bigger issues mentioned by the OP) There's more at http://rt.cpan.org/NoAuth/Bugs.html?Dist=CPAN. The community process seems to be working well enough. Not always as fast as we'd like, but impatience is in our nature, right? :)	[reply]
