Much has been said about XP on Perlmonks. It is something we all like to have even if we don't necessarily base our actions around doing unscrupulous to get it.

How often have you written a complex, well thought out, specific reply (perhaps including working tested code) in reply to someone and got maybe 1, 2, or just a handful of XP for it, whilst someone else made a generic comment and scored 10s of points!

Well now is your time to shine. Post your links to some of the nodes you authored and toiled on for few XP. I'm curious to see some of the great nodes I missed!

Here's some links I'm proud of though they weren't popular: Re^3: Where is the bug in this Net::SNMP code?, Re: WWW::Mechanize submission problem, Re: Put file on webserver via HTTP, Re^2: IO::Select on an IO::Pipe not doing anything, Re^3: Logging into telnet using a socket.

PS: please don't upvote any of the nodes I provided, I'm not looking for XP through this meditation.

Indeed. And, as most of the posts from senior monks say, not much importance is placed on them. XP is a game - a sideshow to what Perlmonks is really about.

However, as a metric of the impact of a post on the monks' community, there are some noticeable trends and factors that can affect the score.

    • What else is on the 24 hour newest nodes radar screen.

    • The time of day it was posted. As PM is 24/7 spanning global time zones, the North American time zones are probably the most significant in this respect, followed by the European.

    • Whether the node has been frontpaged. Though most people with time to seriously surf Perlmonks will be tracking newest nodes, nodes on the front page do seem to receive significantly more votes - the front page seems to be another, different "radar screen".

Posts older than a few days will rarely gain additional votes - such is the nature of Perlmonks. There are other sites using the same engine, such as Everything2, which have a completely different dynamic, where it's all about long term node reputation scores. E2 also works differently, in that nodes can be frontpaged multiple times.

Oh Lord, won’t you burn me a Knoppix CD ?
My friends all rate Windows, I must disagree.

Can't... resist... urge... but what about the South American time zones?

        Lol! :)

I did think about that when I posted, and I know that North/South hemispheres make no difference to longitude and time zones. But I wanted to make the point that the USA and Canada provide the most significant block audience for a node on PM. Also, I thought that if I used "America", our Brazilian monks might feel insulted - that I was using the term to refer to the North only.

Well, I haven't really contributed anything that I'd want to brag about - in fact I'd honestly have to say that the vast majority of my nodes are of the forgettable variety ;)

However.... if you want to draw attention to some nodes worthy of a higher rep than they currently have - then I reckon this recent one by chargrill is a prime candidate. I'm hopeless at Perl golfing and obfuscation - however it still fascinates me. So this was one of those nodes that I really wished I could ++ multiple times.

Update: oh, and while we are at it - lets not forget this absolute gem from everybody's favourite monk. Without a doubt the most under-rated node in the entire monastery :D

    Cheers,
    Darren :)

PS - I think you'll find that the homenode is generally accepted as the appropriate place (if any) for blowing ones own trumpet - so don't be too surprised if the response in this thread isn't exactly overwhelming ;)

The homenode yes, or if your node is really good you could advertise through your signature.

I've been doing that for a while, while being kinda active for the community, and it turned out positively with no negative reactions so far -- but honestly all I did was just put the link in my sig so it wasn't really advertising in the commercial sense :)

Also worth to mention, I did't do it for the XP but I wanted people to comment, give advise, give links to useful modules, tell me I suck, whatever.

And just to make use of this opportunity, it was all about this node. Click :).

Nothing of mine needs to be revisited, but this node should have lots of votes. It is receiving my annual award for Clear Thinking.
