OT: Windows IIS Server Access log

Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hey everyone,

I'm working on a Windows IIS server and my website needs a way to track:

1) who came to our homepage
2) and looked around but did not sign up
3) current member logon rate

Obviously I need some sort of stat tracking script. I was wondering what most people would do? Would they build a script that logs these type of stats and store it to a flat file, or would they let Windows IIS Server handle this?

If its a server side app that generates the access logs, is it my job to build a Perl script to read those logs? Anyone know what direction I should head? Thanks for taking your time to read this post.

I would avoid re-inventing this wheel. IIS can output an "access log" - this basically is a line in a file every time a user requests a page. There are loads of systems online that will parse through those logs, and allow you to cut and dice the data any which way you want - google for "IIS Log Analyser" to see what I mean!	[reply]

Leo, There are so many free apps/scripts out there that do this exact thing. I have been away from webhosting for a while, but I think that Matt's Scripts may have something. I would start there. You may not find exactly what you want, but you should find a good starting script to modify. Good Luck.	[reply]
