Just sorta thinking out loud here....er, meditating.

Microsoft is again renaming (yawn) their still-obsolete operating environment, also known as Windows... to (drumroll) Windows XP In yet another pathetically obvious attempt at leveraging the letter "X".

Since Citrix has already gotten their "don't use my naming convention" letter from MS regarding their "Metaframe XP", is it just a matter of time before Perlmonks is served? :-)

The eXtreme Programming folks aren't happy about this, either.

To turn this away from a Windows bashing forum, since many of the monks do use windows enviroments. (I do, but prefer Linux). XP is a concept here, not a product. Plus in the many roleplaying games I've been involved with xp was often the shorthand.
Seems there are some prior tradmarks:
    Super Soaker XP-90
    Interesting line from XP draft
"This is the first W3C Working Draft of the XML Protocol (XP) requirements"
A RIP Server, and so on.
How many uses of XP are out there? They can go ahead and say "Windows XP" is a trademark, but can they go after past trademarks that use XP?

IANAL but I would expect that if they did that then Perlmonks can just point to Dungeons and Dragons and claim that it is an established term. Besides which it isn't a software product at all and therefore cannot infringe on any trademarks that Microsoft might be trying to aquire. Then vroom can countersue for a frivolous lawsuit... :-)

Considering the relative size of the pockets, Microsoft would stand to lose far more than they possibly have to gain...
