PERLoudly has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I am trying to create alter a script to take a picture automatically from a USB camera and save the jpg using a PERL script. I have found a script that takes a picture from a webcite using the LWP::Simple module and mirror() to take the jpg from a site. I'm not really sure is this just taking the picture or actually causing the webcam to take the picture. My knowledge of controlling these things is not very good at all and my knowledge of modules is also limited to that I can see they're pre built functions you can use. I'd appreciate any help, Cheers, PERLoudly

It depends on your operating system. On Windows you'll treat the camera as a TWAIN device and probably use the google://eztwain library. On Linux and BSD there's the SANE project (Scanner Access Now Easy).

It you're going to mention the definition of SANE, then I think you kind of have to mention that TWAIN is "Technology Without An Interesting Name". (No really).

I only mentioned it because I learned it in the same moment I learned where SANE is on the web.
