Book Share Area

After reading deprecated's post regarding the sharing of books, I decided to get involved.

I offered to create an area, run on Perl, naturally, where folks who needed books, and couldn't afford the regular O'Reilly price, could post a note saying what book(s) they needed.

People who had extra books could come there, see who needed what, and check off whatever they were sending, and send them.

However, as we got to talking about this in the Chatterbox, we came to the conclusion that it might be a nice addition to the PerlMonks site.

Therefore, I am posting this in hopes that everyone can throw in their vote as to whether they would like to see vroom add such an area here. If vroom would rather not, I can put one on any one of my web sites.

Any way to improve the sharing of books (why stop at just perl?) and help mitigate the ridiculously high prices on decent (or worse, lousy) computer books is a great idea. a	[reply]

I don't mind paying for a book that I'll use. But I wasn't always in that situation. And back then this would of been really nice. So I'd be glad to contribute books. I gave a bunch to my local library a few months back, but there are always more. =Blue ...you might be eaten by a grue...	[reply]

I have a close friend who is extremely happy to get my so-called "hand-me-downs" whenever I get the latest edition of a book. I have collected lots of books over the years and find I have to cull the collection from time-to-time. The chance to give a book to someone who might not be able to easily afford it, albeit the previous edition or "hand-me-down" is worth merit. The information in previous editions is usually accurate even though it doesn't have the "latest features" highlighted. There are resources on the 'net to fill in the blanks. Perhaps people could list books they have available and who ever would like the book could accept the book freight collect so the donor didn't have to pay the shipping, and it's a much smaller price to pay for a book. If a book didn't get adopted into a new home within a set period of time, then it could be removed from the list and the donor could find it another home like the local library or the Salvation Army. I'd much rather seeing a book go to a new home where it is wanted and loved rather than going into the void of the Salvation Army bin...
