Read the XS docs: perlxstut, perlxs, perlapi, perlcall.

You can also use Inline::C (very good for simple things) or SWIG to create wrappers for C libraries.

    A very nice addition to the standard docs is Gisle Aas' Perlguts Illustrators, showing nice little diagrams for the internal data structure. If you really plan on going that route. :)
