Actually, being an ex-trekkie, I didn't miss Borg. Had I had the steering wheel, I'd have made a stop there. But I didn't want to bother that much - I saw the looks when I asked for being photographed with the Perl label. :-)

Anyone know the meaning of the words Perl, and Apach in their respective
languages? Including the "commonly used slang meaning"?

From Theodor Fontane's translation of Shakespeare's Hamlet:
"Gebt mir den Trank; Hamlet, die Perl' ist dein"
Apart from that usage which avoids a diphtong by dropping the final vowel, I'm pretty sure that form is used in some places in Bavaria, too ;-)
The final e is dropped in composite words also, e.g. Perlmutt, Perlwein (the former containing "pearl", the latter "bubble".)

It seems that Apach is a town name of german origin, -ach meaning "swift flowing water". Apach was formerly written as Aspach, so it could mean "place at the water where the aspen grow".

By the way, it seems that Germany's fondness for Perl is not limited to naming a town after it: Enter Persil Megaperls (r). Unfortunately, I missed the Persil Power Perls edition.
You can be god damn sure I use that powder to wash my clothes.

Has anyone ever done a poll about hair length and Perl? There seems to be a disproportionate number of men with long hair who are Perl hackers.

I have a road sign picture pointing the way to Perl in the "Found Perl" group on Flickr. I like that the same road sign also points to Apach.
Anyone is free to join that group and add their own found Perl pictures. If you don't want to deal with a Flickr account, you can also just tell me to upload your pictures for you.
