There are many ways to master a programming language, but they all include one thing: write your own programms in that language.

You can gather important knowledge by reading books, online tutorials, the Monestery and other boards. But nothing will be as valuable as really doing it.

So if you don't have a project already, find one. Work on project that you really want or need.

And if you've got quetions, read the docs. If you don't understand the docs, or you think it's not covered there, ask here.

Thanks..... Thanks a lot to you all. For all of your Support and motivation. That's all was needed... Just if any of you could let me know....which book shall I go for (author and all)....as sometimes reading from books gives more pleasure. sir_com
Did you look at the link I gave you to http://learn.perl.org/? It has a section titled 'Books for beginners'. I would suggest starting with 'Learning Perl'. You can also check out the Reviews section of this site.

        Thanks

        Martin
If you already own a copy of Learning Perl and Programming Perl (both O'reilly books), then I suggest you pick up a hardcopy of Mastering Algorithms (also an O'reilly) to dig more deeper into Perl and become more specific in approaching a problem with challenges.

What background do you have? Which parts of Perl do you think is easy? What do you want to use Perl for?

Anyway, the Tutorials section should be a good place to start. Also, you could try to solve the problems that is put forth in this section on your own computer, and follow the discussions and tips that is given.

    cheers

Learning to use the search tools for the monastery very worthwhile. Super Search is a good place to start when you have a Perl question.

Perlmonks is a great resource. But to get the best results, you'll need to spend some time learning to use it effectively.

Good luck with your new endeavor.

As for books, I'd highly recommend the O'Reilly book 'Perl Cookbook'.
Invaluable examples on how to solve real world problems, and explanations as to why the solns work, and ptrs to other solns for related problems & corner cases etc.

I'm sort of in the same boat. Have been dabbling w/ Perl for a few months only, and after checking out some online tutorials I finally bought Programming Perl and the Perl Cookbook. Both books supplement each other very well and have been very helpful. I really like the in depth coverage of the first and the usage examples of the second. I highly recommend them both. Pancho
