It's been one of those days...

My girlfriend, Amanda, was at work until midnight, so I was left alone with my thoughts and even worse (according to her), Perl. I spent hours trying to debug an apparent infinite loop, until I realized that the loop wasn't actually infinite, just really close (runtime of 10 minutes, fan rpm up to 6000, perl was grabbing 97.7 percent of the CPU and Terminal was grabbing 14 percent - figure that one out). I believe that lack of sleep and coffee is to blame. Anyway, it's obvious that some optimization has to be done.

When Amanda got home and asked how my day went, I told her all about the code debugging, but she acted a little uninterested (understandably, since I have to remind her every other week or so that MS Windows, NOT Microsoft Office, is the OS running on her computer). So anyway, to make my story more interesting I told her I found $_[4].

She didn't get it.

Oh well, I though it was funny.

    Maybe you need to add a new sub to your love poem A Love Poem

    sub Or_Not { if ( $my_girlfriend_who_I_love_more_than_life_itself->does_not_like( +'Perl') ){ drink(); read_Playboys(); } }

    I'm not really a human, but I play one on earth. Cogito ergo sum a bum

      You know what? You're absolutely right. Of course, though, I would modify it as such:

      sub Or_Not { if ( $my_girlfriend_who_I_love_more_than_life_itself->does_not_like( +'Perl')
       and $my_girlfriend_who_I_love_more_than_life_itself->is_fed_up_with_me_for('Paying More Attention To My Computer Than Her And Staying On PerlMonks Unitl 3 AM')
      ){ drink(); read_Playboys();
      sleep_on_couch();
      } }

    I don't get it either. Can you explain the joke?

      Have you ever heard of appending a borring story with the expression "and then I found five dollars"? Since the fifth element of the list of incoming parameters to a sub is represented by $_[4], and superficially looks like (to someone's mind who as not in Perl mode) like $4 (currency), and to someone who is partly in Perl mode and partly loopy from lack of sleep and coffee (and thought it would make a good joke) looks like $5(currency) since perl starts counting at 0, I thought it was ironic.

      Actually, while I was typing this response, I got an e-mail from a seller on ebay that he had refunded me $4.99 worth of shipping charges (ironically not because the joke was bad, and the explanation boring).

        Never. Thanks for the explanation though.

        AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA . . .

        Erm. Nope, still don't get it.

        Anyhow. So this one time, at band camp . . .

        Oh wait. Never mind.

    Are you, by any chance, German?

      I'm from Northen Wisconsin, so close enough. And I have German ancestry. I'm ~75% German, Dutch, and Austrian, and the remaining 25% is Norwegian, Irish, and Lenape. My living granmother is 100% German, and I grew up hearing German occasionally often all the time. I love Germany - I'm right at home in Munich, drinking Masses at the Hofbräuhaus and enjoying beer and a brats outside. When I'm up North, (especially around my family or in bars) I speak with a very heavy accent that has a lot of German influence (I watched Fargo and didn't notice an accent). When I went to college, I figured out pretty quickly that my accent isn't the most intelligent sounding, and I can turn it on and off. Sorry for the long winded post, but I guess it explains my sense of humor.
