I think it must be a fair thing to say that cpan has well and truly reached a stage where it is far too difficult to ever browse and digest the breadth of modules that exist there in a single sitting. According, i have this suggestion to PerlMonks: would it be possible to have a nodelet or similar where monks could vote/rate their favorite perl modules on cpan, and/or provide min-advertisements for 'cool' modules?

if anything like this already exists, then could some kind soul post a link for it? i know i for one would love to stay more in touch with what's new, what's old & good, and what's just plain cool on cpan...

just for fun, here is a shortlist of my 10 cpan favorites -- of course there aren't many surprises about the top few...
strict, CPAN, CGI, DBI, Apache, GD, IO::Socket, Benchmark, Apache::Session, Storable (bet it's hard to guess what i do for a job... ;-) )
