samuelalfred has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hello, Can anyone please explain to me how to install PAR::Packer? I'm on a Windows XP machine with ActivePerl 5.10.0 Build 1004 installed. I haven't installed any further modules or such.

I have tried to install PAR and PAR::Packer with the PPM but this doesn't work. For some reason it is unable to download packlists from any server.

So what is the best way of installing PAR::Packer? The reason I want to do this is to be able to create stand alone executables from my perl scripts.

Please not that I do not have a C compiler installed. I have seen that this is sometimes needed for PAR::Packer. If so, how do I install such a compiler?

Thank you in advance!

Assuming you are using the GUI, many people miss the fact that you must select "View all packages [Ctrl+1]" from the upper-left toolbar (the gray box) - the default view is installed packages. Also note that for searches "::" should be replaced by "-". I see both desired modules in my version.

... how do I install such a compiler?

    Just run:
    ppm install MinGW
That will give you the 'dmake' make utility and the MinGW port of the gcc compiler (including g++ and g77). Once that's done, you're set to go - no further confgiuring is required.

    Cheers,
    Rob

Fix this by configuring proxy settings, refer to FAQ for instructions.
How do I find out what proxy server I am using? And what port if that is needed? Thanks, Samuel
easiest way is to check what your browser uses, or ask your admin.
