      Interestingly, the link on that page (where it says "O'Reilly & Associates maintain the trademark on the use of camel in association with Perl") is broken.

        OK, didn't check that. Searched around a little at O'Reilly's and found a Perl Camel FAQ ...

    I suspect that the Camel logo came about through a combination of the O'Reilly book designer and Larry Wall's sense of whimsy ("Camel -- a horse designed by a committee" -- old joke). At any rate, the Camel appears on the cover of my first edition of 'Programming Perl' (signed by the authors; it's going to be a collector's item an another thirty years or so....). It would appear that Camels and Perl have been associated together since 1991.

      Yesss... I suppose that for me (and for maybe many others) Perl and The Camel are associated and that is (partly?) because of the O'Reilly publication(s?) - although we may not consciously acknowledge that.

      I am still not comfortable though. London.pm adopted a camel at London Zoo. (citation needed) That's because London.pm love: (a)Perl (b)O'Reilly ..?

      This may be in danger of going OT, but...

      I think O'Reilly are great. I probably have more of their books on my shelves than any other technical publisher's. But... the way they say that kind of pushes my buttons.

      I acknowledge I am not an expert in the history. For me,

      (Perl -> Camel) <-O'Reilly, not (O'Reilly->Camel)<-Perl
