First, you didn't indicate what we were doing to pit perl against other languages. I try to avoid that unless it is to correct FUD. Just because I love perl doesn't mean someone else will. If their decision is based on FUD I will happily point out the truth but I not a holy war monger.

Second, a number of those things had nothing to do with people who had already chosen perl. For instance - talking about perl to whoever will listen and teaching perl at lunch. In other words, I am always trying to get new people to perl but not at the expense of pitting it against their language.

Third, I am sure my update indicating the reason I posted the list was up there before your response. You may not have seen it but I assure you that while I am a pompous ass with ego problems - that was not the reason why I posted the list.

    I think that point was that the OP came across a page that had no representation for Perl. What good is our advocacy really doing if none of us are being mindful enough ensure Perl is being properly represented at such places? How many people looked at that page and missed out on a chance to choose Perl?

      That's a fair interpretation. I would have made that clear in the root thread and I also would have used different wording because "against", for me, has negative connotations.

      Perhaps:
      I feel like perl is under represented in a number of places where other languages are dominating. What places do you know need more attention and what are you doing to help so I can pitch in to.

      I am sorry if that's what was meant and I interpreted it the wrong way but there wasn't much context for me to guess.

    I never said "pit" either. I find it interesting that you go there. What I did imply was that instead of hanging out here and stroking my ego, I tried to give Perl good representation outside this little group. Without a face.

      Once upon a time, some two decades or so ago, I was an active and well-known participant on a local dial-up BBS. One day, there was a discussion there (I don't recall the topic) in which another of the site's prolific users made a comment that I wished to reply to, but I wanted my comments to be read and responded to objectively, without being viewed more favorably due to my reputation or my relationship with him.

      And so I posted them anonymously.

      This caused quite a stir and backfired miserably, as the discussion of "why did the poster hide behind anonymity?" distracted and detracted from my words far more than my reputation would have, were my name attached.

      From what I saw then and have seen many times in many places since then, it is clear that anonymity, as a rule, detracts from your credibility rather than enhancing it.

      (As a practical matter, there's also no way here to tell which AnonyMonk posts are from the same person and which are not. It appears that at least two distinct AnonyMonks have posted in this thread, but the exact number is a mystery.)

      I am not trying to be combative. I didn't post it anonymously because of a post someone made a long time ago. It had to do with not hiding behind AM, being held accountable for your words and other noble truths that appealed to me at the time. I can see your point though and can't argue with it. Next time I will - promise ;-)

      Regarding "pit", you are also right. You did say "against" which to me were the same. I know better than to put words in your mouth so sorry again. I do feel you could have done a better job asking what you wanted in the root thread though as well as your clarifying response as I pointed out to the other AM in this thread.

      The fundamental unit of programming power is the programmer. Programmers are human. Humans use heuristics to evaluate things. One of those heuristics is the reputation of the people presenting them information. Doing it "without a face" is neither efficient nor effective.

      It takes an awfully big ego to make claims about acting egolessly.
