in reply to YAPC::EU 2010... when exactly?

I have never been to a YAPC (EU or otherwise) - what usually goes on at them?

YAPC Europe gives 'themes' but what actually do people talk about? Is it all talks? What is the pitch of the talks? i.e. are they specific "The use and buse of MooseX" etc...) or general "Perl as scientific glue" ( Lincoln Stein ). How much 'networking' and job-mongering goes on?

Sorry for all the questions, and if there are better links than the ones I got from google, then point me towards them!

Just a something something...

That's really up to you. If you do not get involved then conferences can be lonely places. If you are not naturally gregarious then try to arrange to meet up with people. Sessions will allow you to speak up but can be intimidating. The BOF (Birds Of a Feather) meetings are generally good for making contacts and fairly informal.

I would say there's a lot of 'networking' going on - in fact, for me it's an important aspect of the conferences (not just YAPC, or Perl conferences, there are other non-Perl conferences I visit), if not the most important aspect. For me, "networking" has resulted in (academic) papers, two jobs (including my current one), new friends, the discovery (over and over again) that people in real life are far more interesting and multi-facetted than they are as letters on a screen.

As for job-mongering, both YAPC::EU and YAPC::NA have had stands with recruiters/HR people for the past couple of years (typically for sponsors). Details vary a bit from conference to conference; NA seems to have more stands, but more limited (and sceduled) time, as in EU there are less stands, but they're there during the entire conference. And there are always people saying "we're hiring".

Thanks ( and cdarke! ) - I guess it is pretty much like a large academic conference then - plenty of behind-the-scenes stuff going on!

It's like a national conference ... just bigger.

Since it's EU its also much about coordination of colonizing the world, especially spreading languages, religious believes and economic systems.

Hot topics ATM are a new opium war with China, deporting sending more protestant fundamentalist to Northern America and trading slaves in Africa...

    Cheers Rolf

    UPDATE: ;-)

Also "Media domination and consorting with minors"? We could all learn from Berlusconi.

        > "Media domination"

Sorry no comment ... I'm not allowed to talk about this...;)¹

        Cheers Rolf

¹) ... nobody expects Rupert Murdoch... (especially when coming with Mrs. Robinson xD)

      > ... sending more protestant fundamentalist to Northern America

      Reality beats satire...

      German homeschoolers granted political asylum

...well... 7 more voters for Palin... 8-|

      Cheers Rolf

BTW: The date of YAPC::EU has been confirmed now! 8)
