It was there in 1.40 (earliest still on CPAN, 29 May 2003). I seem to remember using it in 2001 or 2002 as well but I'm too lazy to look it up in BackPAN.	[reply]

Wow! Looking inside, the copyright goes way back to 1995. I guess I just never thought to look for a module that does little more than I can do with nested arrays.
